FAQ’s

Who is eligible for Family Support Services?

Families who are caring for a person with a developmental disability, live in the community (not in a residential/group home), and are eligible for DDS services.

What is DDS and how do I apply?

DDS stands for the Department of Developmental Services. You can apply for DDS eligibility by contacting your local DDS Area Office or speaking with a Lifeworks Family Support Coordinator for guidance.

What is flexible funding?

Flexible funding is financial assistance provided through DDS to support the unique expenses that are related to your family member’s disability. It can be used for respite care, adaptive equipment, community activities, and other services. Funds are limited and not guaranteed. Families should discuss this service with their DDS Service Coordinator.

Is there a waitlist for services?

Some services (especially those requiring staffing or funding) may not have any current openings. We will work with you to find interim resources or referrals if needed. Referrals for some services must come through your DDS Service Coordinator.

Do I need a formal diagnosis to get help?

Yes, for DDS-funded services your loved one must have a qualifying diagnosis and be deemed eligible through DDS. We can help you understand this process. We are happy to provide information and referral services, and access to our family trainings and workshops to any interested person.

Activities and Education Programs

Are the activities free?

Many of our family events, support groups, and workshops are free thanks to DDS funding. Some activities may have a minimal cost or require pre-registration.

Can siblings or extended family participate?

Yes! Many events are family-friendly, and we encourage participation from siblings and extended family members. This provides a wonderful opportunity to meet other families and connect with those in your community.

How do I register for an event or workshop?

Event details and registration links are sent out via email and posted on the events webpage. You can also call the Family Support Center for more information.

Do you offer virtual workshops?

Yes! We offer many educational sessions over Zoom to make it easier for families to attend from home.

What age groups do you serve?

We serve individuals of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families—children, teens, and adults.

How do I get on your email list or request support?

Call the Family Support Center or fill out a contact form online to join our email list, register for events, or schedule a consultation with a Family Support Coordinator.
