Lifeworks at 70: Reflecting on Our Journey and Looking Ahead
Lifeworks’ 70th Anniversary Inspiring Possibilities Jubilee was the centerpiece of our year-long celebration marking seven decades of service and advocacy.
Lifeworks’ impact over the years was celebrated through an engaging video presentation, interactive timelines, a photo showcase, a room filled with families, staff, sponsors, and friends. Our Artists Gallery and Theatre Arts performances highlighted the incredible talents of individuals who participate in our programs.
The event was an evening of joy and inspiration, expertly emceed by award-winning journalist Heather Hegedus, who is the parent of child with Profound Autism. Heather is a strong advocate for increased state and national funding to address the workforce crisis and other issues impacting the ID/DD community.
A special tribute was given to Leo Sarkissian, who retires as Executive Director of the Arc of Massachusetts after 33 years of tireless service. Leo’s remarkable journey in advocating for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities began at the Arc of South Norfolk (now Lifeworks) in 1981.
We also welcomed Maura Sullivan, who will take on the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Arc of Massachusetts beginning November 2nd. Maura’s appointment marks a historic moment as she becomes the first parent of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD to lead The Arc since Pearl Birnbaum Hurwitz, the organization’s inaugural director, in 1954.
Throughout the year, generously presented by our major sponsor Prio Wealth, Lifeworks has hosted a series of commemorative events. These included a Legislative Breakfast co-hosted with Charles River Center, a Cornhole Tournament, the Social and Recreation Program
Banquet, the Scholarship Awards Reception, the Jubilee itself, and two weeks of Staff Appreciation events. And the celebration continues, with more to come—including the Employment Services Banquet and the Legacy Club Induction Ceremony.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our many corporate and family sponsors who have made this milestone year possible The event video, program book, photo slideshow, lists of sponsors can all be found on the 70th Anniversary webpage: https://lifeworksarc.org/70th-anniversary-celebration/.
Lifeworks Potpourri: Summer Memories and What’s to Come
This summer at Lifeworks was filled with exciting activities and events. Individuals had a blast bowling at Ryan’s, exploring Drumlin Farm in Lincoln, and enjoyed a special Girls’ Night where they got creative with soap making, sugar scrubs, and pampered themselves with manicures and pedicures. The adventures didn’t stop there! Groups also toured Horizon Aviation School at Norwood Airport, getting a close-up view of a Cessna and the runway, they spent a thrilling day at Lake Compounce in Connecticut, and wrapped up the end of the softball season. Additionally, a group from LES Norwood was recognized at the HESSCO Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at the Four Points by Sheraton in Norwood. It was an incredible summer full of fun, exploration, and community spirit!
Looking ahead, Lifeworks will host the Lifeworks Legends Club event in December, a celebration dedicated to honoring staff members who have been with the agency for over 10 years. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their dedication and contributions to our organization. Closer on the horizon is the Lifeworks Employments Services (LES) Banquet taking place on November 8th. This event will celebrate the accomplishments of individuals we serve, as well as honor their employers for their support and partnership. It’s sure to be an inspiring evening.
2024 Sports Banquet: Celebrating Dedication, Teamwork, and Triumphs

Summer wouldn’t be complete without the marquee event of the Social-Recreation Program—the Annual Sports Banquet. This year, the event returned to the Tiffany Ballroom at the Four-Points Sheraton in Norwood, with approximately 150 guests, including athletes, coaches, and volunteers, gathering for a night of celebration and cheers. Director of Social and Recreation Programs Kate Kalinoski and Director of the Autism Support Center Brian Clark once again served as Masters of Ceremony, presiding over an evening filled with joy and achievement.
Participants enjoyed the chance to reconnect with friends, teammates, and family, and cheer on each other’s sports triumphs. The evening featured a delicious dinner, a season highlight reel showcasing the athletes and games, and, of course, dancing to the tunes of our favorite DJ, Steve Bishop, “The Man of Many Hats.”
The trophy presentation was the highlight of the night, recognizing outstanding performance in each of the six sports: cornhole, basketball, bowling, bocce, floor hockey, and softball. Awards were given across categories such as Bowler of the Year, Highest Single Score, Highest Average, Sportsmanship, Most Improved, Team Spirit, and Dedication. There were lots of cheers as each athlete was celebrated for their hard work and success.

This year, the prestigious 2024 Ben Keister Award was presented to Katherine “Kat” Bynarowicz for her contributions to the basketball team and supporting our athletes to be the best they can be And, the Recognition of Continuous Support Award for 2024 was awarded to Andrew Nathani for his dedication in coaching Bocce, where he makes sure everyone is having fun and improving their skills.
The excitement of the evening culminated in the raffle prize drawings, with proceeds going toward program expenses like equipment, field rentals, travel, and staffing. Lifeworks extends heartfelt thanks to the generous companies and individuals who donated prizes, helping to make the raffle a resounding success.
We would also like to express deep gratitude to our community partners, including the Norwood Sports Center, Ryan Family Amusements in Millis, the Town of Norwood, Walpole Italian American Club, and Xaverian Brothers High School, for their ongoing support. As a token of appreciation, each athlete took home a Lifeworks thermal travel mug to add to their collection of Lifeworks gear.
